Precautionary measures for Thunderstorm or Lightning

ANY SIGNS FOR LIGHTNING? THEN HEAD TO THE SAFETY IN SHELTER.

Lightning

Stay away from metal items like plumbing, stoves, electrical items, etc. Stay away from windows and doors.

Thunder

Wear ear muffs on the off chance that a nearby strike will cause thunder so loud that you lose hearing because of the intensity. (not likely)

BELOW ARE THE SOME BEST TECHNICS YOU CAN FOLLOW:

  1. Get inside as quickly as possible and close your windows and doors when you hear thunder as it means lightning is close enough to strike.

  2. Stay inside for 30 minutes after hearing the last sound of thunder.

  3. Avoid open areas like hilltops, fields, and beaches. Keep moving towards a safe shelter(strong building) immediately

  4. Stay away from loose hanging power lines, tractors and from equipment, motorcycle, bicycle, etc

  5. Stay away from open fields, under trees, water bodies. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, meaning that it can travel far. Tents and pavilions are not good options.

  6. While being in an enclosed car is not as safe as being inside a building, it is a safer option than staying outside. The reason is the metal shell of the car disperses the lightning to the ground.

  7. A common misconception is that thunderstorms have to be nearby for lightning to be a danger. Lightning can strike very far from a thunderstorm.

Mild Storms

For mild storms, do not use electrical appliances connected to an electrical source, and showering during a thunderstorm is somewhat safer but the lightning can still go through the plumbing, giving you a terrible if not fatal electrical shock.

Severe Storms

If there is a chance of a lot of rain and your basement drain outside the door is clogged, first get a net to trap the leaves out of the stairs to the basement and get an expandable dam. These barriers that inflate with rain are very helpful for preventing a flood. For hailstorms, not much is advised as hail storms are very unpredictable and the last resort is to seek shelter in the basement if your skylight exploded. If you see a dark lowering of the clouds and they are rotating, this is a sign that a tornado may be imminent. If a tornado strikes, seek shelter in the lowest and smallest place possible.

False Alarms

There are a few false alarms that can make you panic but they only can give a little gust and a soaking. A dark line of ragged clouds rapidly approaching and then suddenly becoming windy and rainy is not a concern. This is called a gust front and they look way more imposing than their true effects.

Tents, tarps, porch overhangs, and open structures like golf course shelters do not provide any protection from lightning at all.

Thunderstorms can bring heavy rains (which can cause flash flooding), strong winds, hail, lightning, and tornadoes. Severe thunderstorms can cause extensive damage to homes and property.

Lightning is a major threat during a thunderstorm
